Although the US market is made up of Chinese made goods, our relationship with the Chinese will maintain so long as we keep buying. China is not a US "friend" nor should we assume that the Chinese do not see the US and it's naval power based within the Pacific as a potential threat. The military modernization program which began in the late 1980s and is still on-going was first to maintain capabilities against the former Soviet Union but that soon shifted towards the US after the USSR and Warsaw Pact fell.
